Parent Homework Tips
From: Help for Billy, Chapter 10, by Heather T. Forbes
  1. Work through problems together and sit down to do the homework with your child. Create a positive homework experience with your child, free of stress and threat.
  2. Have your child teach you. Take an interest in your child's homework, and send the message that what they're learning is important.
  3. Help your child regulate themselves. Interrupt negative feedback with breaks, snacks, play time, or deep breaths.
  4. Break long assignments into small chunks. Nothing good comes out of your child feeling overwhelmed. Work to build up your child's endurance.
  5. Give emotional space and validate your child's feelings. Use sentence starters like, "I understand that..." and follow up with, "It's ok, I'm here to help you."
  6. Reduce stress in the environment. Help to keep his/her brain calm.
  7. Find a consistent time to do homework, and that may be after some down time, later on in the evening.
  8. Reduce the pressure and accept that your child is doing his/her best at that moment.
  9. Put relationships first, and schoolwork second!

Hillary’s Happenings
What a strange weather week!  I am excited to be back and see everyone.  We continue to work hard in the LMC.  In kindergarten, we have been studying Eric Carle – the author and illustrator.  We have read many of his stories and enjoyed his unique illustrations.  First graders have been learning about non-fiction text features (bold and italic words, graphs, and diagrams) and how they can help us understand what we read and learn.  First graders are going to start to use PebbleGo to research an animal.  Second graders have been introduced to a series (A to Z Mysteries) so they can read for pleasure.  They will also be starting to do research using databases such as PebbleGo, Britannica, and World Book.    Third graders have been learning about the city of Livonia.  They have been researching its history, geography, population, and industry, and we will continue to do so for a few more weeks.  They will then put all of the new information into the Google Slide presentation that they started.  Fourth graders have begun to learn the difference between primary and secondary sources.  We will continue to learn about primary sources through the Tenement Project.
March is Reading Month is just around the corner.  We, as a staff, are working hard to prepare a fun and exciting month.  Please remind your child(ren) that we have many new books in the LMC for them to choose from so they can reach their reading goals.
I am still looking for old smartphones that are no longer being used.  We have some virtual reality cardboard viewers that require a device to work.  IF you do have one to donate, please wipe all data and remove all passwords from it (do a “factory reset”).  We just need to be able to connect to the school wi-fi to use them.

Stay warm and dry!

ELV's Needed!
Rosedale is so lucky to have a group of
Elementary Literacy Volunteers (ELVs)
read with our students each week.
Our group is in need of more volunteers
(teenagers-adults) to support our program for the rest of
this school year. Volunteers typically work an hour a week, and
are fully trained how to work with the students.
If you are interested, or know anyone who might be,
please contact Tracey at traceyleejakubowski@gmail.com.

Please check our Lost & Found table
in the lobby. It's loaded with articles waiting
to be claimed!

Looking Ahead......
There is NO SCHOOL on Monday, Feb. 18 due
to mid-winter break.
And Wednesday, Feb. 27 is a HALF DAY,
due to teacher Professional Development.

Valentine's Day is this Thursday, Feb. 14.
Your child's teacher will communicate
classroom plans for Valentine's Day festivities.
Our second, third, and fourth graders
will be walking to CHS to see
'Peter Pan' that morning--

permission slips to be able to attend!

Have a wonderful weekend,
Mrs. Kohler
